How to Choose a Hong Kong Private Hospital? Tiered Guide to 13 Hospitals

Hong Kong has 13 registered private hospitals, each with different strengths. It's not about the most expensive — it's about matching your needs. This guide helps you find the right fit quickly.

Quick Answer

The core logic for choosing a hospital: needs first, budget second, location third. Different hospitals specialize in different areas — pick the right one and you save time, money, and hassle.

Why focus on private hospitals? Public hospital specialist waiting times are extremely long (2026 data: ophthalmology up to 117 weeks, orthopedics up to 79 weeks). For time-sensitive cross-border patients, private hospitals (typically 1-2 weeks to arrange) are the practical choice.

How to Choose?

Honestly, most mainland patients coming to Hong Kong don't need to agonize over which hospital — your condition determines whether you should go public or private, not your budget.

  1. Don't want to wait for the long public hospital queues (some specialties have 6+ month waits)
  2. Need specific surgical equipment or techniques (e.g., da Vinci robotic surgery)
  3. Have the budget and want a better hospital experience

If you're not sure which category you fall into, check out this hospital selection guide for detailed comparisons by specialty.

Arthur's Take

These are my honest opinions based on research and patient feedback. No sponsored content, just my perspective.

Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital

If budget isn't an issue and you want the best, this is the one. But be prepared — their bills can be eye-watering. If you choose this hospital, ask for a detailed quote upfront — many patients report that final bills are higher than expected.

Gleneagles Hong Kong Hospital

My personal favorite for value. It's new, clean, and the doctors are from HKU. If you want quality without the crazy price tag of HKSH, this is a solid choice.

St. Teresa's Hospital (St. Teresa's)

This hospital has a good reputation among budget-conscious patients. It's not fancy, but the doctors are experienced and the fees are transparent. Just don't expect luxury.

Baptist Hospital

If you're staying in Kowloon and need heart treatment, this is convenient. But parking is limited — better to take the MTR to Argyle Street and walk.

Union Hospital

The go-to for IVF in the New Territories. Many mainland couples come here. Just know that their success rates are similar to HKSH, but the price is much lower.

Matilda International Hospital

Beautiful location on The Peak, but it's a hassle to get to if you have mobility issues. Great for orthopedics though — their spine surgeons are top-notch.

Precious Blood Hospital

Don't let the name fool you — it's a proper hospital, not a clinic. If you need orthopedic follow-up and want to save money, this is worth considering.

Evangel Hospital

Their imaging center is genuinely good. If you just need an MRI or CT scan, you can get it done here faster than at the big hospitals. Less waiting, lower cost.

Hong Kong Adventist Hospital - Stubbs Road

Good for minimally invasive surgery. The location is a bit out of the way, but it's quieter than the big hospitals. Good if you want a more relaxed environment.

CUHK Medical Centre

The newest hospital, backed by Chinese University. If you want academic hospital vibes without the HKSH price, this is worth a look. Still building their reputation though.

St. Paul's Hospital

Old-school hospital with a good reputation in cardiology. Not as flashy as the new ones, but the doctors have been around for a long time. Solid choice.

Canossa Hospital

Small and specialized. If you need dialysis or community services, they're good at it. Not a full-service hospital, so check if they have what you need first.

Hong Kong Adventist Hospital - Tsuen Wan

Convenient if you're in the New Territories. Not as well-known as the other Adventist hospital, but still decent quality. Good for routine care.

Important Reminders

The following information is compiled from public sources for reference only. Please contact the hospital directly to confirm the latest policies before your visit.

1. Referral Letter System

  • Public hospitals: Referral letter required to book specialist (Hospital Authority rule)
  • Private hospitals: Not legally required — you can book specialists directly
  • But a referral letter is recommended: Many insurance plans require one for claims; a GP assessment before referral is also more thorough
  • Mainland patients note: Referral letters from mainland doctors are not directly recognized in Hong Kong — you still need one from a HK-registered doctor

2. Cost Composition

Hong Kong private hospital fees typically include: doctor fees (consultation/surgery), hospital facility fees, anesthesia, medication, tests/lab work, and room charges. Fees vary significantly between hospitals and doctors — request a written quote in advance.

3. Language

Most private hospitals offer English service, some have Chinese service. If you need translation support, I can help arrange it.

4. Mainland Resident Public Hospital Fees

  • Accident & Emergency: approx. HK$1,230 per visit
  • Inpatient: approx. HK$5,100 per day
  • And you still have to wait. That's why cross-border patients typically choose private hospitals.

Pitfall Guide

Cost Traps

  • Final bill may exceed expectations: the pre-admission quote is usually just the base cost — actual bills may include extra tests, medications, special nursing, etc.
  • Request a detailed cost estimate before admission, including surgery, anesthesia, room charges, etc.
  • Confirm insurance direct billing: some hospitals support insurer direct settlement (免找数). Confirm your coverage before admission.

Emergency vs. Outpatient

  • Private hospital ER fees are much higher than outpatient: ER consultation typically $1,000-2,000+, outpatient only $300-800
  • For non-emergency situations, book an outpatient appointment — saves money and the doctor has more time to diagnose

Mainland Test Reports

  • Most Hong Kong hospitals accept reports from mainland tertiary hospitals (CT, MRI, blood tests)
  • Bring original reports — English is best, Chinese is also acceptable
  • Some hospitals may require re-testing, especially if reports are old or incomplete

Referral Letter Pitfall

Mainland referral letters are almost useless in Hong Kong — HK hospitals only recognize referral letters from HK-registered doctors. Many people don't know this and waste time and money.

Getting There from Shenzhen

Here are the common routes from Shenzhen. Times are estimates excluding border crossing.

Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital (Happy Valley)

Route: Futian Port → Lok Ma Chau Station → East Rail Line to Admiralty → Island Line to Causeway Bay (Exit F1) → 8-min walk
Time: ~70-80 mins (excluding border crossing)
Cost: MTR ~HK$50-60
Tip: HKSH is on a hill in Happy Valley. If you have mobility issues, take a taxi from Causeway Bay (~HK$30-40).

Gleneagles Hong Kong Hospital (Southern District)

Route: Futian Port → Lok Ma Chau → East Rail to Admiralty → Bus 970/970X to Gleneagles
Time: ~80-90 mins
Cost: MTR + Bus ~HK$60-70
Tip: The hospital is near Cyberport. It's a bit remote — consider taking a direct taxi from the border (~HK$150-200) to save time.

Baptist Hospital (Kowloon)

Route: Futian Port → Lok Ma Chau → East Rail to Mong Kok → Walk or short taxi
Time: ~60-70 mins
Cost: MTR ~HK$45-55
Tip: Very accessible from Kowloon. If you're coming from Shenzhen Bay Port, it's even closer (~40 mins by taxi).

St. Teresa's Hospital (Kowloon City)

Route: Futian Port → Lok Ma Chau → East Rail to Mong Kok → Bus/Minibus to Prince Edward Road
Time: ~65-75 mins
Cost: MTR + Bus ~HK$50-60
Tip: Located on Prince Edward Road West. Easy to reach by public transport. Parking is limited though.

Union Hospital (Sha Tin)

Route: Futian Port → Lok Ma Chau → East Rail to Sha Tin → Taxi or bus to Union Hospital
Time: ~50-60 mins
Cost: MTR + Taxi ~HK$50-70
Tip: Sha Tin is the first major stop in the New Territories from the border. Very convenient if you're coming from Shenzhen.

Matilda International Hospital (The Peak)

Route: Futian Port → Central → Bus 1 or taxi up to The Peak
Time: ~90-100 mins
Cost: MTR + Bus/Taxi ~HK$80-120
Tip: It's on The Peak — the view is amazing but it's a hassle to get to. Consider taking a direct taxi from Central (~HK$60-80 uphill).

Mainland Patient Flow

1

  • Single endorsement stay limit: typically 7 days

2

2. Choose Hospital & Book

  • Book via hospital website, phone, or I can help coordinate
  • Private hospitals allow direct specialist booking — no referral letter required
  • Some hospitals support online booking (e.g., Gleneagles, CUHK Medical Centre)

3

3. (Optional) Get Referral Letter

  • If you need insurance reimbursement, see a GP first for a referral letter
  • GP issues referral after assessment, valid for 3-6 months typically

4

4. Consultation

  • Bring referral letter if you have one
  • Some hospitals offer Mandarin service; I can arrange translation if needed
