Quick Answer
Weight-loss injections are prescription-only in China — a doctor must prescribe them, and purchases happen offline at a hospital with a prescription. Three injectable drugs are approved for long-term weight management: semaglutide (Wegovy®/Nuoheying®), mazdutide, and tirzepatide (Mufengda®). The general eligibility threshold is BMI≥28, or BMI≥24 with at least one weight-related comorbidity. Tirzepatide's list price starts at ¥324 per box (2.5mg, ≈ 1 month) — weight-management use is fully self-paid, and a first outpatient visit typically totals ¥600-1,400.

Timeliness note
- December 1, 2022 — the Prohibited List for Online Drug Sales (First Edition) ↗ took effect: injectables (except glucose-lowering drugs) may not be sold online (NMPA Announcement No. 111 of 2022)
- May 15, 2026 — the revised Drug Administration Law Implementation Regulations ↗ (State Council Decree No. 828, published January 16, 2026) took effect, tightening the rules further under Article 46
I recently heard from an expat client living in Southeast Asia who wanted to get Mounjaro (tirzepatide) in Shenzhen for weight management. He sent over a blood test report from last year: BMI above 35, plus dyslipidemia — by the eligibility standards of the weight-loss drugs approved in China, he is a textbook candidate.
Talking it through, I found a common sticking point in these inquiries: people don't know prescription drugs require a doctor's prescription, nor how the process works in Shenzhen. This guide puts together what I've learned from actual escort visits — which weight-loss injections can be legally prescribed in China, the eligibility criteria, which hospital to go to, and roughly what it costs.

Three injectable drugs are currently approved for long-term weight management in China. Many people confuse them — especially semaglutide and tirzepatide. Both end in "-tide", but they are different drugs.
Drug comparison
| Brand name | Generic name | Mechanism | Eligibility (weight management) | Trial weight loss* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wegovy® | Semaglutide 2.4mg | GLP-1 single agonist | BMI≥30; or BMI 27-30 with comorbidity | ~13-15% |
| Mazdutide | Mazdutide | GLP-1/GCG dual agonist (domestic new drug) | BMI≥28; or BMI≥24 with comorbidity | ~14-15% |
| Mufengda® | Tirzepatide | GLP-1/GIP dual agonist | BMI≥28; or BMI≥24 with comorbidity | ~20%+ |
Weight-loss figures are rough magnitudes from clinical trials; individual results vary. Your doctor's assessment is what counts.
- •Semaglutide entered China's weight-management market earliest (Wegovy® launched November 2024) and has the most accumulated real-world use; in early 2026 Wegovy also cut prices sharply (starting strength down to ~¥230 per pen, maintenance ~¥1,300 per box, subject to the hospital pharmacy's quotation). Peking University Shenzhen Hospital has a detailed science article on suitability.
- •Mazdutide is a domestic new drug — the world's first GLP-1/GCG dual-agonist weight-loss drug.
- •Tirzepatide (sold overseas as Mounjaro; Mufengda® is the unified brand name for all indications in China) has the strongest weight-loss data and officially launched in China on January 2, 2025.

Tirzepatide's approved indications in China
- Type 2 diabetes (glycemic control, approved May 2024; single-agent therapy additionally approved February 2026) — covered by medical insurance
- Long-term weight management (approved July 2024) — BMI≥28, or BMI≥24 with comorbidity
- Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) (approved July 2025, the world's first weight-loss drug OSA indication) — moderate-to-severe OSA in adults with obesity
Wait for the next-generation drug, or start now?
You may have seen headlines about the next generation of medications: Lilly's triple-agonist retatrutide delivered an average 28.3% weight loss over 80 weeks in its Phase 3 trial, and participants with severe obesity who stayed on it for two years lost up to 30.3% (Lilly official press release, May 2026). Impressive numbers — but the drug is still investigational and has not been approved by any regulator; even in the best case, it would be years before it could be routinely prescribed. In other words, the three medications available today are the best options you can actually get right now. With weight management, it pays to start working with your doctor on today's options rather than waiting for tomorrow's.
Do I Qualify?
That's your doctor's call, but you can pre-screen yourself against the threshold. Using tirzepatide as an example:
Weight-management indication — meeting either criterion gets you into the doctor's evaluation:
- BMI ≥ 28 kg/m² (obesity)
- BMI ≥ 24 kg/m² (overweight) with at least one weight-related comorbidity: hypertension, dyslipidemia, high blood sugar, obstructive sleep apnea, cardiovascular disease, etc.
Your doctor will also assess:
- •Previous weight-loss history — under China's obesity diagnosis & treatment guidelines, people with BMI≥28 generally need 3+ months of proper diet control and regular exercise first, with medication considered only if that fails
- •Lab results — blood glucose, lipids, liver function, etc.
- •Personal & family history — contraindicated for those with personal/family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or type 2 multiple endocrine neoplasia; contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Calculate Your BMI
BMI is calculated from height and weight only and does not constitute medical advice. Whether medication is appropriate depends on your doctor's in-person assessment.
The Process in Shenzhen: Registration to Medication
The whole first visit usually takes half a day.
Book ahead
Register with endocrinology or a weight-management clinic — where a hospital runs both a specialist obesity clinic and a weight-loss MDT clinic, choose the specialist clinic for a prescription-focused first visit (MDT multisciplinary consultations cost more, are harder to book, and are reserved for complex cases and drug-vs-surgery decisions). Book popular specialists 1-2 weeks ahead via the hospital's WeChat account or the Health160 platform. Call the hospital pharmacy before your visit to confirm stock — higher strengths (7.5mg+) fluctuate in supply, so you don't waste a trip.
Consultation + test orders
Bring recent checkup/blood test reports (glucose, lipids, liver function, thyroid) — results within 6 months are usually accepted; otherwise you'll have blood drawn on site.
Assessment & prescription
The doctor weighs your BMI, labs and history to decide whether medication suits you, which drug, and the starting dose.
Pay & collect
Prescription drugs are dispensed at the hospital pharmacy. Tirzepatide pre-filled pens need 2-8°C refrigeration — confirm storage on site.
Nurse-guided injection training
A nurse demonstrates site rotation (abdomen/thigh/outer upper arm), disinfection, injection and pressure. One session is enough to learn.
Self-inject at home
Inject once a week at a fixed time. If you miss a dose, take it within 4 days (96 hours); beyond that, skip and resume next week — never double up.
Which Hospital?
Based on public information about these hospitals' weight-management clinics, here's my comparison (the count is my own overall suggestion based on public information, not an official rating):
| Hospital | Accreditation | Weight-loss clinic | Public prescribing reports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shenzhen Qianhai Taikang Hospital | Grade III general* | Weight Management Center (multidisciplinary) | First in-hospital Mufengda® prescription in Shenzhen (Jul 2025); listed among "2025 Medical Weight Management Teaching Units" (per hospital WeChat) |
| Sun Yat-sen University Eighth Affiliated Hospital (Futian) | Grade IIIA | Weight Reduction Medicine Center (est. May 2025, first in Shenzhen) + obesity MDT clinic (Mon/Thu PM; first visit at the endocrinology obesity clinic) | Endocrinology physicians have given academic talks on standardized obesity medication (listing tirzepatide and semaglutide as key weight-management tools); no first-prescription reports yet |
| HKU-Shenzhen Hospital | Grade IIIA | Endocrinology obesity clinic (treatment scope explicitly includes medication); IMC weight-management clinic newly opened in 2026 | Officially states "well-stocked obesity-related medications"; no "first prescription" news; excellent experience for expats |
| Peking University Shenzhen Hospital | Grade IIIA | Weight Management Center (opened Mar 2025, first public one) + national weight-management research unit | Science articles on weight-loss injections, no public prescription cases |
| Shenzhen Second People's Hospital | Grade IIIA | Precision Obesity Management Clinic + Weight Management Center (opened May 2026) | Endocrinologist on record confirming rising GLP-1 weight-management prescriptions after the new rules |
| Sun Yat-sen University Seventh Affiliated Hospital | Grade IIIA | Weight Reduction & Weight Management Clinic (endocrinology) | Focus on nutrition intervention and TCM fasting therapy |
| Shenzhen People's Hospital | Grade IIIA | Weight Management Center positioned as "non-pharmacological weight-management demonstration base" (the only one in Shenzhen) | No public reports of weight-loss injection prescriptions — call ahead to confirm drug stock and prescribing policy |
* Taikang was built to Grade IIIA standard but holds Grade III status (new hospitals need years of operation before IIIA review); all others are Grade IIIA.

Taikang's Weight Management Center
Worth a closer look because it moved earliest in Shenzhen on medication-based weight loss: the center combines endocrinology, clinical nutrition, gastroenterology, bariatric surgery, rehabilitation and psychiatry in one multidisciplinary team. The first tirzepatide prescription was issued by Chief Physician Xiao Zhenghua's endocrinology team; Dr. Xu Shufang (MD PhD from Wuhan University School of Medicine, postdoc at Tongji School of Public Health, HUST; former director of clinical nutrition at Wuhan Central Hospital) leads the semaglutide weight-management program.

Cost Reference
Tirzepatide comes as pre-filled injection pens — 4 pens per box ≈ 1 month (one injection per week). After the 2025 national insurance negotiation, new prices took effect nationwide on January 1, 2026, cutting over 80% across strengths:
| Strength | List price/box (4 pens) | Per pen | Treatment stage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tirzepatide 2.5mg | ¥324 | ~¥81 | Starting dose (weeks 1-4) |
| Tirzepatide 5mg | ¥551 | ~¥138 | Common maintenance dose |
| Tirzepatide 7.5mg | ¥751 | ~¥188 | Escalation phase |
| Tirzepatide 10mg | ¥936 | ~¥234 | Higher maintenance dose |
At launch, prices were ¥1,758/box (2.5mg) and ¥2,758/box (5mg) — 2026 list prices have fallen sharply. Higher strengths (12.5mg/15mg) depend on hospital pharmacy stock; monthly cost rises with dose, roughly ¥900-1,600/month at higher strengths (estimated from the price ladder; the hospital pharmacy's quotation prevails).
Paying out of pocket (for expats without Chinese insurance)
The list price is what you pay — it's low because of the national insurance negotiation, and it applies uniformly to every buyer regardless of insurance status. The only difference: insured type 2 diabetes patients can get reimbursed on top of it, while you (weight-management use + no insurance) simply pay the full list price.
Monthly cost reference for long-term users (self-pay)
| Treatment stage | Monthly cost (self-pay) |
|---|---|
| Starting 2.5mg (month 1) | ¥324 |
| Maintenance 5mg | ¥551 |
| Escalated to 10mg and above | ¥936-1,600 |
How Does Mainland Pricing Compare Globally?
A quick horizontal comparison (based on the monthly cost of the 2.5mg starting dose, all self-pay, at ¥7.1/$):
| Region | Monthly cost (self-pay, 2.5mg starter) | In USD | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mainland China (expat, self-pay) | ¥324 | ~$46 | Hospital pharmacy list price (2026 insurance-negotiated price) |
| Japan (online clinics) | ~¥1,150 (6,000 JPY/pen × 4) | ~$160 | Includes teleconsultation and cold-chain delivery |
| USA (list price, no insurance) | $1,086-1,349 | — | Manufacturer programs can bring it to $25-449/month, but short-term visitors generally don't qualify |
| Hong Kong | Prescription-only via registered pharmacies; no public list price | — | Classified as Part 1 Poison — dispensed under a registered pharmacist |
| Southeast Asia (SG/MY/TH) | Varies widely by clinic | — | Common "injection travel" destinations |
Bottom line: for self-paying expats, tirzepatide's list price in Shenzhen (and mainland China overall) sits in the lowest tier globally — roughly 4% of the uninsured US list price, and well below Japan's online clinics. Combined with a half-day visit that covers assessment → prescription → dispensing → injection training, that's the core reason many Southeast Asian and Hong Kong clients come to Shenzhen.
Timeliness note: drug prices shift with policy and channel; the figures above are public data retrieved in September 2026 — confirm real-time quotes with local pharmacies/clinics before travelling.

One last reminder
Weight-loss injections aren't a "lie flat and get thin" magic trick. In that first Taikang patient's plan, lifestyle intervention ran alongside the medication the whole way — that order never changes. Follow up as directed while on the medication, and seek care promptly if anything feels off. If you're coming to Shenzhen from elsewhere and need booking, escort translation or report organization, my escort service covers the full journey.
